Why WBD?

Whimsy by Doodlebugs began with a simple dream—to see India's extraordinary weaves, textiles, and craftsmanship take centre stage in contemporary fashion. For generations, beautiful fabrics like Ikkat, Khadi, Indigo, and countless regional weaves have been admired in traditional attire. We believe they deserve to shine beyond clothing.

The dream began with Dr. Nirmala (Nimmi to those who know her) and soon found its biggest supporter in her husband, Christopher, who came aboard to help turn that dream into reality.

Nimmi's personal fascination with bags began when she was in her teens. Always having been 'plus size', shopping for clothes and even footwear had always been a nightmare. The one thing that she could confidently purchase without worrying about the fit, was a handbag. So while her friends shopped for clothes, Nimmi always had a wide selection of handbags.

Why should a fabric handbag be "just a shopping bag"?

At WBD, we reimagine Indian textiles as premium handcrafted handbags and blazers that are distinctive, functional, and full of personality. Our designs are inspired by nature—the curves of a shell, the colours of a garden, the grace of a butterfly—and brought to life with handcrafted embroidery, delicate zari work, and thoughtful detailing.

Premium fashion doesn't have to be predictable. It can be joyful. It can be expressive. It can tell a story.

Before starting WBD, Nimmi worked as a doctor and spent many years in the NGO sector. During that time, she and her colleagues established a vocational training unit for women seeking healthcare through the organisation. The experience reinforced her belief that beautiful products can also create meaningful opportunities for women.

For our premium handcrafted collections, we collaborate with talented local karigars, bag makers, and garment manufacturers. Every purchase supports not just exceptional craftsmanship, but also the dignity and empowerment that meaningful work can bring.
